All about Elden Ring
Elden Ring, a 2022 action RPG, was developed by FromSoftware, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, featuring worldbuilding by fantasy author George R. R. Martin. The game was released on February 25 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Players take control of a customizable protagonist on a mission to restore the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.
The game is experienced from a third-person perspective, allowing players to explore its vast open world. The six main regions are navigated using the player’s horse, Torrent, as the primary means of transportation. Hidden, linear dungeons can be discovered to obtain useful items. Players can wield various weapons and cast magic spells, with stealth mechanics enabling non-direct confrontations. Checkpoints throughout the game world enable fast travel and attribute improvement using the in-game currency, Runes. Elden Ring also features an online multiplayer mode, where players can engage in cooperative and player-versus-player combat.
During development, FromSoftware aimed to create an open-world game with gameplay reminiscent of Dark Souls, envisioning Elden Ring as an evolution of the series’ debut title. Miyazaki, an admirer of Martin’s work, sought his involvement to create a more accessible narrative than the company’s previous titles. Martin was granted complete freedom to craft the backstory, while Miyazaki took the lead in writing the in-game narrative. The development team focused on environmental scale, roleplaying, and storytelling, necessitating the construction of numerous structures within the open world.
Elden Ring garnered widespread critical acclaim, with praise directed at its open-world, gameplay systems, and setting, though some criticism was leveled at its technical performance. The game won multiple Game of the Year awards and sold over 20 million copies within a year. An expansion, titled Shadow of the Erdtree, was announced in February 2023.
